But then my colleagues at Brookings released new data on air travel between metros, which should be a good proxy for demand for rail over short corridors. I added these data and also tweaked Glaeser's assumptinos about the interest rate and the passenger costs. It looks much better for Dallas-Houston, but crucially (though not in the blog do to space constraints), only for the top short-distance corridors, which are not all in the NE. Vegas-LA also looks like a winner.

I'd be curious to know what you think.

http://www.tnr.com/blog/the-avenue/high-speed-rail-getting-the-assumptions-right#

Best wishes,
Jonathan RothwellJ.T. The question is whether the overall density of a region in North America is comparable to the density in a region in Europe or Asia.

As to air transport, the problem is time. I live in DC--if I want to go to Phila or NY it never makes sense to fly because I can get to my destination faster by train. I do not fly up the coast unless I am going somewhere beyond NYC, e.g. Boston.JacobShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14158148962651517738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33399132.post-7751424353606239202009-08-26T14:41:31.005-07:002009-08-26T14:41:31.005-07:00Three things seem missing from this discussion. (2)We know people are willing to pay for access to HSR because land prices are higher near HSR stations. We could collect some of this increase to pay the capital cost. (3) American HSR doesn't necessarily have to be like the 160 mph TGV. Reliable 100 mph trains are much cheaper to build and would be competitive in corridors like Chicago - St. Louis.Chuck Metalitzhttp://menaceofprivilege.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33399132.post-86198043208978155202009-08-26T09:13:38.225-07:002009-08-26T09:13:38.225-07:00OK, I'll kick this can a little ways down the ...OK, I'll kick this can a little ways down the road.

The chart of urban densities has no relavance to the discussion. Krugman was speaking to inter-urban transport, not intra-urban transport.

What you need is a measure of the number of people that move between urban centers that are the economical distance for high-speed rail. Then you can show that the US is or is not comparable to Northern Europe.GregLnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33399132.post-14783879911989883972009-08-26T06:57:24.381-07:002009-08-26T06:57:24.381-07:00I think that the graph shows the investment in hig...I think that the graph shows the investment in high speed rail would be better spent on building transportation systems that promote increasing density. Maybe he was just saying that although the optimal amount of high speed rail for the U.S. is less than for Europe, it's still a lot more than what we currently have, that there are still many places where it would make economic sense in the U.S., but we don't have it.Richard H.
